Hacklewood Hill Country House

Hacklewood Hill Country House

Conveniently set in the leafy suburb of Walmer, Hacklewood Hill Country House is a 5 star boutique hotel in Gqeberha. Built in 1898, it is one of the few remaining Victorian manor houses in the city and as such retains much of the elegance and grace it would have boasted when its first inhabitants - a young doctor and his family - once lived here.

Our Accommodation

We offer you exclusive luxury accommodation in a lush English garden setting. You are greeted with intricately stained glass doors, gleaming wooden floors and the gentle sheen of wooden banisters lovingly buffed and polished for more than a century. A black and white checkerboard tiled veranda overlooks a sparkling swimming pool, perfect for leisurely dips on hot summer days, while the well-established garden beckons for a quiet stroll or perhaps even a civilised game of croquet on the lawn. The more energetic can opt for a gentlemanly game at the onsite tennis court or just choose a secluded spot in the garden to enjoy the abundant birdlife which call the grounds of Hacklewood home.

The manor house’s eight luxury en-suite guest rooms which are equally as enticing, especially as each so perfectly captures the essence of the Victorian age. Each is individually decorated in palettes ranging from pastel blues and rose bedecked pinks to more masculine browns and reds. As a result, each room has its own unique character and returning guests will enjoy experiencing them all, and will, no doubt, be loath to pick a favourite at the end.

Our Facilities & Services

The dining room's magnificent chandelier lights, to full perfection the cut glass, crystal goblets, starched linen and full silver service on the tables below, while superbly trained waiters serve a splendid array of cordon bleu dishes that emanate from the kitchen. Little wonder that the restaurant has garnered itself a slew of fine dining awards and has become a firm favourite on the Gqeberha dining scene - not only for its exquisite dinners, but also full English breakfasts, high tea's and light lunches.

For a thoroughly enjoyable trip back to a time when days were long and unhurried, furnishings were beautiful and handmade, and every meal was an occasion to use only the best china and silverware, guests need look no further than Hacklewood Hill Country House.

About the Area

Here in the semi-desert of the Great Karoo you can experience silence like hardly anywhere else on earth, breath clean and fresh air, and the night sky offers some of the best stargazing in the world.

The town has a rich history closely linked with two legendary characters of South Africa’s diamond industry. John O’Reiley, who purchased the first diamond found in South Africa from its owner, Schalk van Niekerk, took it to Colesberg for testing. It was used to scratch “DP”, the initials of Draper and Plewman, a store which still exists, on the shop’s window. Once the stone had passed this test, it was sent to Dr Guybourne Atherstone, a well-known geologist. He confirmed it was a diamond and so started The Diamond Rush.

Hopewell Private Game Reserve

Hopewell Private Game Reserve

Situated close to the Addo Elephant National Park and in South Africa’s beautiful Eastern Cape, Hopewell Private Game Reserve is easily accessible. We are a 30 minute drive from Colchester and a 50 minute road trip from Gqeberha’s airport (previously Port Elizabeth).

Our secluded Hopewell Lodge has sweeping views over the grassland and forest that typify the beauty of this diverse region. Perfectly positioned for panoramic views and designed to blend into the hilly landscape, our spacious African game lodge is perched above the elephants’ favourite watering hole, with a viewing deck which provides the ideal spot for afternoon cocktails and to enjoy our sumptuous meals.

Our Accommodation

The lodge is largely built from local stone. Furnished in contemporary safari style with a focus on comfort and relaxation, it is airy and light, with thatch to insulate against the African summer heat as well as fireplaces to ward off cooler nights in winter.

There are two comfortable lounges, a dining area for the days when weather does not permit al fresco dining, and an intimate conference room. The upstairs lounge has the lodges only television and the downstairs lounge is home to the bar.

We provide luxurious and stylish accommodation to a very limited number of guests. Connected to the lodge by a series of pathways and steps, there are four luxury suites named Buffalo, Nguni, Zebra and Rhino which are secluded in their own private patch of bush with sweeping views across the valley below. Each suite has a wide deck with an umbrella, deck chairs and sun loungers as well as plunge pools except for the Nguni Suite. The Nguni Suite though has a fabulous private bush gazebo with views over the waterhole below.

The open-plan interior of the suites flows seamlessly from a luxurious lounge to the sleeping area to the open bathroom. The rooms are light and spacious with large sliding doors that open onto the deck. The suites are not only luxurious but romantic too. Each room has a large fireplace between the bed and the large bath tub which has been placed close to the glass wall allowing for excellent views into the African bush.

Our Safaris

Thanks to our exclusivity, your guided safari is not disturbed by large groups of other game vehicles and viewers. Our proximity to the ocean also ensures that we are the only game reserve in the region to have thick grasslands interspersed with tall trees. This allows for unparalleled game viewing.

Hopewell Private Game Reserve exists on reclaimed farm land which, generations ago, was the natural environment of the Big Five and a host of other big game but was overtaken by farming. Our private Eden covers a 6600-acre reserve where the owners have made a principled conservation investment to restore and regenerate the farm land to its natural state.

On a safari today, just as 250 years ago, you are likely to encounter elephants, buffalos, hippos, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, leopard, warthogs, various antelopes and indigenous species that have been carefully re-introduced to maintain a balanced eco-system. By visiting our Hopewell Private Game Reserve you too are helping to preserve Africa’s natural beauty.

Our scenic Kogman & Keisie Guest Farm is nestled between the charming village of Montagu in the Klein Karoo and the mountains of Montagu Nature Reserve. Montagu is a favourite destination of many a traveller and is situated on Route 62, the well known meandering route between Cape Town and Qgeberha. The name of our guest farm is derived from the dramatic, rock strewn Cogmans Kloof Valley and the modest Keisie River that meets here.

Kogman and Keisie is a working organic farm with olive trees, goats and a small vineyard. We grow our own vegetables, pomegranates and lavender with a few well behaved farm chickens wondering about.

Our Accommodation

We provide guests with luxury self-catering accommodation as well as guesthouse rooms with breakfast included.

All our self-catering cottages are stylish and unique and we are developing our farm, including the guest cottages, into eco-friendly living spaces. Each cottage has its own kitchen or kitchenette. Some cottages have their own private barbeque (braai) and others use the communal braai at the swimming pool.

During the hot summer days, we cool down in the swimming pool or wait for the sun to make way for the unsurpassable Karoo night sky, to the whisper of the windmill turning in the lazy evening breeze.

Wi-Fi internet is available around the main building. There are also two bicycles available for hire, a laundry service as well as safe and secure semi shaded parking.

Events

Our Greenhouse was originally built to realise a dream that both owners harboured for many years. The dream was to have a greenhouse where we can cultivate herbs and other crops, but also use as a multli-functional space.

Today it is often used as a venue, and events include birthday parties, long-table dinners, intimate weddings and launches. We have a fully functional kitchen for catering and everything needed to host an event for up to 56 people, with informal seating on the lawns. A parking area close to the greenhouse can accommodate up to 40 cars. We can also erect a marquee immediately adjacent to the greenhouse for larger events.

We also offer an event planning service and can assist with arranging decor, catering, flowers, music and other logistics for your perfect event.

Kubu Lodge

Kubu Lodge

There is a place on the banks of the Chobe River, our Kubu Lodge which is situated in the warm heart of Northern Botswana, where tranquillity and beauty mix with raw wilderness. Here the immaculate Chobe bushbuck shares its sanctuary with warthog, mongoose, and abundant birdlife, whilst the hippo and crocodile hold domain over the riverine paradise.

Easy access to the wild bounty of Chobe National Park allows our guests at Kubu Lodge to revel in the joy of mud-slinging elephants, share in the thrill of stalking lions, and marvel at the vibrant abundance of birdlife.

Our Accommodation

Our small privately owned and managed safari lodge has no radios, no television, no five-star prices, however, offers "just" five-star hospitality amidst the splendour of a wild river with its spreading trees and birdsong for company.

Eleven thatched, wooden chalets are elevated on their own private deck. Spaced out beneath the giant flamboyant and wild fig trees, each chalet enjoys a tranquil setting. Strategically placed among the rolling lawns are comfortable day beds where you can relax to the rythm and views of the Chobe River.

The decks of Morubisi (Owl) Bar and Leathaba (Sunrise) Restaurant overlook the river and lodge grounds, marrying gourmet cuisine with spectacular views. A swimming pool, reading/games lounge and a nature trail provide relaxation for the more active, whilst a small curio shop offers a chance to find that perfect gift.

Go on game drives and boat cruises into Chobe National Park; visit a crocodile farm or wildlife centre and on a day trip Victoria Falls.

Whether you want the freedom of Bed & Breakfast, or the luxury of "fully inclusive" with game drives and boat cruises included, our lodge has the flexibility to suit every need. Established in 1986, Kubu Lodge is proud to be the longest owner-run, owner-managed accommodation establishment in the Chobe region - a testament to the deep passion and dedication the owners have for the area. A warm welcome to your home in the heart of Africa.
