Kaoxa Bush Camp

Kaoxa Bush Camp

Enjoy the view of the Limpopo Valley as you look out at the rocks and Baobab trees.

The area (Limpopo Valley) is an ancient, arid (dry) unspoilt part of Africa. Kaoxa Bush Camp is in the Limpopo-Shashi confluence area near the boundaries of Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa. The Limpopo Valley is known for its majestic Baobab trees. Kaoxa Bush Camp comprises 3 intimate cottages built with stone and thatch and 3 Safari tents, all with en-suite bathrooms. They open onto your personal deck overlooking an extraordinary vista.

Information displayed in the camp about the inhabitants of the bushveld, and remains from the Bushman culture will enrich your stay with us.

The new Mapungubwe National Park is also on our doorstep just a 10-minute drive to the main entrance.

Our Accommodation

We now have a campsite available for those that wish to camp with us.

The Farmhouse Kaoxa is a beautiful place to unwind with friends and family in the African bush in the midst of the Koppies (rocky hills), surrounded by Kalahari-sand and ancient Baobab trees. Elephants roam freely.

Our thatch cottage has open ended eaves to allow air circulation. There are two beds with their own mosquito nets, separated by a chest of drawers. Electric lamps give subtle yellow insect- free lighting. A ceiling fan ensures air circulation and there is an electric plug socket. The back of the cottage has a basin, shower and toilet that are separated from the sleeping area by a ‘half wall’. Large picture windows help bring the stunning African views into the room. Outside is a 2×5 m elevated wooden deck, where you can relax and watch game. Each unit is far enough away from its neighbour to ensure privacy.

Our safari tents are covered by a separate roof for shading and weather protection. Each tent has a basin and shower with a separate lockable toilet. The sleeping area has two beds resting on a built-in ground sheet and separated by a chest of drawers. Windows and doors are all netted. Subtle electric lamps set the mood, and there is an electric socket. You can view the gorgeous views from a stone and cement verandah . Adjacent to this is a small barbecue, should you prefer to prepare your own food rather than using the communal area in the boma.

Matoppo Inn

Matoppo Inn

Dining

Breakfast, lunch and supper are served in the dining area dating from the 1830s. High wooden ceilings evoke a bygone era, while big sash windows let fresh Karoo air and sunlight into the space where shining yellow wood floors previously hosted great meals, state functions and balls.

In the summer, you can dine on Karoo cuisine in the courtyard or in the comfort of your own air-conditioned room. To keep the Karoo winter chill at bay, dinner is served beside a roaring wood fire. Chefs produce a three-course meal based on a menu option made by you. Please make your dinner reservations prior to arrival.

Short History

Today known as Matoppo Inn, Matoppo House has a long and rich history that dates back to around 1835. It is one of Beaufort West's most magnificent and stunning historical homes, stark in its simplicity. The main home was erected for Magistrate Johannes Jacobus Meintjies, the famous Andries Stockenström's son-in-law. Though it was Meintjies' private residence and hence not technically a 'drostdy' (official residence of a landdrost or magistrate), it has been known by that term for a long time.

Because it quickly became the town's social center, Meintjies Street, which leads to the gate, was extended to 80 feet (24,4 meters), the same width as the main street, so carriages could turn at the gate. Later, the street was transformed into a lively market with a smithy. Today Matoppo House serves as a pet-friendly guesthouse.
