Rhino River Lodge

Rhino River Lodge

Situated 30kms north of Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park, our family-owned and operated Big 5 Rhino River Lodge is located in the magnificent, 23,000-hectare Manyoni Private Game Reserve in the very heart of Zululand. This area is renowned for its African wildlife and rich cultural heritage.

Our relaxed safari lodge has a reputation for excellent customer service and superior value for money. Experience South Africa at its best, amongst untamed nature and warm hospitality. Join us for our guided game drives in an open safari vehicle, where a knowledgeable ranger will show you the Big 5 and many other African animals and birds. Enjoy hearty South African cuisine highlighting local ingredients, served under the stars around a campfire. Indulge in a comfortable night’s sleep in our well-appointed safari accommodation.

Accommodation

Rhino River Lodge offers three types of accommodation to suit our guests’ various needs. Guests can choose from double en-suite luxury rooms, family chalets or one of our two-bedroom private safari homes (the Cottage and the Homestead). The camp accommodates a maximum of 24 people at any time. Our game lodge grounds sprawl through an area of thick riverine vegetation, rich with bird and animal life, and filled with magnificent fig and fever trees. The grounds include the reception with curio shop, a swimming pool, a dining room with bar and a guest lounge. Wi-Fi is also available.

Safari Activities

We have become one of the premier wildlife viewing destinations in Kwa-Zulu Natal and feature beautiful varied landscapes from acacia thornveld to open savannah and riverine forest. Game drives are regulated by the reserve and coordinated by ecotourism businesses to minimize the impact on the environment and the wildlife and to provide guests a better and more intimate game viewing experience.

While on a guided safari at Rhino River Lodge you will have the opportunity to not only see the Big 5 - rhino, elephant, buffalo, leopard and lion, but also cheetahs, wild dogs and much more game. Your day will begin just before the sun rises as guests meet up at the main lodge area for a cup of coffee or tea and freshly baked muffin before the three hour morning game drive begins at first light, which includes a midway coffee/tea break.

Upon returning to camp, enjoy a full English-style breakfast. After breakfast the day is yours to relax and at approximately 1:30 a light lunch will be served. The afternoon game drive begins about 2.5 hours before sunset. Just before sunset the game drive vehicle will stop for a special safari tradition, the sundowner. As the sun sets, take in the air, sights and sounds of the African bush while having a refreshing beverage. The drive will continue on for a short while after the sun sets, in search of the more rarely observed nocturnal animals.

Back at camp, a hearty three-course dinner is served, weather-permitting, under the stars around the campfire under the stars. After dinner, you are welcome to join us around the campfire for a night cap.

Samara Private Game Reserve

Samara Karoo Reserve

Welcome to a unique BIG5 African safari experience 55 km from Graaff-Reinet in South Africa's Great Karoo semi-desert. Samara Karoo Reserve is an award-winning conservation journey in a heart-stoppingly beautiful setting. Born in 1997 of a desire to restore the Great Karoo to its former glory, this private game reserve has pioneered the rewilding of a landscape that had been turned over to agriculture for the best part of three centuries.

Assembling 11 farms totalling 67,000 acres, Samara’s founders vowed to restore the magic of this place, embarking on an ambitious programme of land restoration and wildlife reintroduction. Today, thousands of wild animals roam this born-again wilderness and Samara is working with local stakeholders to extend the conservation ethic to over 3 million acres. 26 guests at a time are invited to join Samara’s conservation journey and help to shape it for the future.

Whether you want to go on safari with the whole family or on foot, you are looking for a romantic retreat and want to sleep under the stars, have a bush picnic or would like to celebrate a special occasion or even experience the game reserve on a mountain bike, Samara is a BIG 5 game reserve where guests get their own private piece of Africa to play in.

Luxury Accommodation

Two intimate, five-star and owner-run lodges, with a true sense of place and sleeping 26 people, offer a quintessentially warm Karoo welcome, with myriad activities on offer to explore, entertain and educate. Whilst on safari at Samara you will bask in the exclusivity of being one of few people in a vast wilderness of the African bushveld.

The Karoo Lodge

Encircled by a natural amphitheatre of mountains, the lovingly renovated farmhouse sits in perfect harmony with its wild surrounds and lies on the first property bought by the Tompkins family when they started Samara in 1997. Combining modern day comforts with a rustic and welcoming feel, Karoo Lodge is the perfect place to relax and allow the tranquillity of the Karoo to envelop you – on the wide verandah in summer or by the cosy fire in winter. With 9 double rooms of varying sizes, it caters for individual travellers, couples and families.

The Manor House

Contemporary style meets Karoo living in the Manor House which can also be booked exclusively. This luxury villa offers a contemporary take on Karoo living, sleeping up to 8 guests in comfort and style. The villa opens up into two living areas and two smaller breakaway lounging alcoves. In summer large glass doors are cast wide open to the patio, with a large infinity pool, and in the winter months you can unwind by the fireplace where a crackling fire burns. Dining takes places in a well-appointed dining room adjacent to the comfortable bar area. There is also a small breakfast room next to the kitchen, which can double up as a study.

When the weather is fair, candlelit dinners are set up on the verandah, on the lawn under the purple-flowered Jacaranda tree or out in the bush beneath a star-studded sky. A Karoo-style boma, fashioned out of an old water reservoir, is the perfect place for pre-dinner drinks around the fire.

Reconnecting with Nature

Regenerating South Africa's Great Karoo region through rewilding and responsible tourism - In staying at Samara, every guest plays a role in safeguarding the landscape in perpetuity. Yet for those who visit, Samara’s magic extends beyond its conservation importance. To immerse oneself in this soulful landscape of infinite horizons is to experience a recalibration of the frantic modern mindset and a deep reconnection with nature.

Our aim is for every guest to leave Samara Karoo Reserve empowered by the healing energy of nature, having reconnected with what's truly important.

Sibuya Game Reserve

Sibuya Game Reserve

After arriving at the reception of our breathtakingly beautiful and malaria-free Sibuya Game Reserve in Kenton-on-Sea, you embark on a 45 minute boat cruise along the Kariega River. Sibuya is one of the country’s most unique safari destinations. From its reception near the ocean, it is unique in that it has more navigable river than any other game reserve in South Africa. Consequently, with nearly 400 different species, as a birding destination it is hard to beat. It is also a sanctuary to an abundance of diverse wildlife from elephants to otters, and almost everything in between, including the Big Five, which guarantees you fantastic game-viewing experiences.

Our Accommodation

We offer accommodation in two luxury tented camps as well as superb cuisine. On arrival at either the Forest Camp or River Camp, you will settle first into your luxury en-suite tent on a raised wooden deck, and then proceed to a scrumptious buffet-style lunch. With just four tents at River Camp or eight luxury tents at Forest Camp, our guests are ensured of a secluded and personalised stay.

Almost exclusively run on solar power, both camps do not make allowance for Wi-Fi, air conditioning, fans, hairdryers and the like. Guests are invited to relax and enjoy the simplicity of life without these modern conveniences. We highly recommend if you require these extra features choose rather to stay at our secluded and luxurious bush lodge which has grid electricity and caters to these needs.

Guests staying at our luxury, thatched bush ldge, lying in a pristine valley just outside the main reserve, enjoy a short transfer with their guide in a game drive vehicle from the river to their lodge where a delicious buffet-style lunch awaits. As the bush lodge has only five suites, you will be spoilt by the professional and friendly, ensuring a memorable stay.

Activities

Sibuya’s extremely knowledgeable and professional guides share their passion on personalised and informative game drives, a variety of relaxing or exciting activities and exclusive boat trips. Relax afterwards by the pool or in a hammock.

Volunteering

As part of a gap year, a sabbatical or eco travelling, the Sibuya Wilderness Experience offers volunteers the unique and exciting opportunity to get behind the scenes and involved with the conservation efforts of Sibuya Game Reserve. This is the perfect eco volunteer program for you, if you are looking for a meaningful travel opportunity abroad that puts your passion for nature, environment and wildlife to good use, trying to make a difference.

Wake up each day to take in the iconic mountain views, before exploring the beauty of valleys, mountains, lush bush and awe-inspiring landscapes, and choose from a myriad of things to see, do and experience, such as boat trips, rafting or hot air ballooning. Or simply escape to feel the soft breeze on your face, soak up the fresh mountain air and unwind at umVangati House.

Whether you are exploring the breathtaking scenery of the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve, the Panorama Route and the Lowveld, or getting acquainted with African wildlife on a day trip with a safari in Kruger National Park, our centrally located guesthouse is an ideal base to discover this magnificent region. We are also situated close to numerous attractions such as an interesting animal rehabilitation.

Stargazing at umVangati House is phenomenal. How better to end a blissful day in Africa, but to sit reflecting under the star studded-canopy of the African sky, the vastness of infinite galaxies stretching before you.

When time comes for you to leave, you will feel a special connection with nature, rested and invigorated by its nourishing silence, ready to take on life again in this busy world of ours.

Vingerklip Lodge

Vingerklip Lodge

A place of mystery, wind-sculpted rocks and far horizons! Our marvellous Vingerklip Lodge nestles in a timeless valley on the 3000 ha Farm Bertram that is surrounded by a game fence helping us to protect and preserve the wildlife.

One of the most dramatic rock formations in Namibia is the 35m high pillar of rock, the Vingerklip or Finger of Stone, which is visible from the lodge and stands proudly above this valley in the ancient landscape known as the Ugab terraces.

Our Accommodation

Our child-friendly Vingerklip Lodge offers 12 thatched double unit bungalows comprising 24 en-suite rooms which are individually furnished and equipped to satisfy all travellers' requirements. Each air-conditioned unit has a private terrace to complete the atmosphere of relaxation and tranquillity. Eight of the units offer loft accommodation for two children each.

Our Facilities

Our 1600 ha private reserve has three waterholes in various locations around the lodge with the main waterhole being flood lit at night. Various types of wild animals, including giraffes, eland antelopes, zebras, kudus, oryx, springboks, impalas, warthogs, baboons and steenboks, frequently visit the waterholes and are also often spotted when following the walking trails.

On top of the Plateau Mountain, fine wines and refreshing, locally brewed beer is served at our restaurant, complimenting our gourmet cuisine and buffet in the spacious dining area. A sheltered sundowner veranda offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and the unmatched splendour of a Namibian sunset.

Our Vingerklip Lodge also offers two swimming pools where you can spend lazy afternoons. For those who prefer a more luxurious and warmer form of relaxation, the Jacuzzi is open to guests at their convenience.
