The Knysna Heads, situated in the picturesque town of Knysna, are a famous landmark and a must see for every Garden Route visitor. Those two dramatic sea cliffs guard the entrance to the lagoon at the mouth of the Knysna River and have become infamous due to the loss of boats passing through their treacherous and unpredictable waters. While the West Head is only accessible by ferry, the East Head is easily accessible by car and offers many spectacular viewpoints overlooking the channel, Indian Ocean, the Knysna Lagoon and estuary, and the Outeniqua Mountains.
The Western Head is well worth the visit too and is primarily a privately owned nature reserve. Ferry or catamaran trips are conducted regularly from the waterfront, where you enjoy afterwards some of the famous Knysna oysters in one of the cosy restaurants or explore some of the small unique stores around the waterfront.
