Selous Game Reserve 

Situated in the Southern Circuit of Tanzania, the Selous Game Reserve covers 50,000 square kilometrers and is mostly unaffected by human activity. This is one of Africa's largest protected regions. The land is home to a large population of elephants, black rhinoceros, cheetahs, giraffes, hippos and crocodiles, among other African wildlife. 

The reserve also features a diverse range of habitats, including Miombo woodlands, open grasslands, riverine forests and wetlands, making it an important laboratory for ongoing ecological and biological processes. 

The Government of Tanzania decided in 2019 to further develop and enhance tourism in Selous by excising the northern part of this wildlife reserve to form a new national park known as the Nyerere National Park, in honor of the first president of the country. 

The Selous Game Reserve was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. (Source UNESCO)
