Thabaphaswa Mountain Sanctuary
A favourite basis en-route to Kruger Park in South Africa or other African countries, our pet-friendly Thabaphaswa Mountain Sanctuary offers several rustic self-catering accommodations near Mokopane and bush camping in the stunning nature of Limpopo's Waterberg area.
The Thabaphaswa mountain towers over the adjacent hills. “Thabaphaswa”, in the local dialect, means the mountain of the black and white bull - a well-known landmark to the inhabitants and ethnic groups in the area which describes the coloured patterns of the indigenous Nguni cattle.
Our Accommodation
Thabaphaswa conceals, in its magnificent natural setting, one of South Africa’s best-kept architectural and leisure secrets - an evocative mountain retreat. Designed by the inimitable Heinrich Kammeyer and custom-made, our camps fit perfectly into their specific sites. The owners’ wish to blend nature and the use of natural materials were perfectly executed.
Thabaphaswa provides a wide range of accommodation on a working Ngui farm offering the choice between self-catering or camping for individual travellers, families or travel groups. The two cottages and our three bush camps are camouflaged between the big boulders on the farm which blend into the mountain landscape. Please note that we do not have electricity in any of our accommodation. The farmhouse has solar power for emergency use such as charging mobile devices though.
Our camp sites are totally different from those mostly found in South Africa at holiday resorts and caravan parks. If you want to feel part of the African wilderness, camp out in the bush and the mountains, then you ahve come to the right place. Our campsites are far apart for more privacy and are spread out in the bush under shady trees. Each can accommodate at least two tents/trailers/caravans, although there are campsites that can accommodate eight tents or more for larger groups of campers.
Thabaphaswa is a special destination for the true nature lover. Experience the most amazing sunrises when the sun grazes the mountain tops. Gaze at the stars on clear evenings from your bed in our uniquely designed shelters. Enjoy a hot outdoor shower and prepare breakfast under a canopy of trees.
And last, but not least, our working Nguni cattle and stud farm provides the complete adventure experience, offering hiking, mountain biking, 4×4 trails, rock climbing, abseiling, birding, swimming and fishing in a dam as well as farm holidays within a 3 hours drive from the international OR Tambo airport in Johannesburg. You can also discover the variety of game, bird and plant life of the area on our property.

Well positioned off the N3, the main route between Johannesburg and Durban, our lodge is a four-and-a-half hour drive from the busy metropolis of Johannesburg and a mere three-and-a-half hours from the aromatic coastal city of Durban. The breath-taking mountains of the central Drakensberg lie an easy one-and-a-half hours’ drive away. Making the lodge even more accessible is the 1.2 km landing strip for light aircraft and helicopters can comfortably land directly at the lodge.
Whether Springbok Lodge is your intended destination or the base from which to explore the surrounding Battlefields and Drakensberg you will be assured an exceptional stay and safari experience - the lodge continues to achieve its AA Superior Accommodation Accreditation since 2009.
Our Accommodation
While the Big Five experience alone is enough to attract visitors, all guests staying at our child-friendly Springbok Lodge leave with a different idea of “camping”… we call it glamping!
Of our 21 luxury en-suite tents are 13 standard two sleepers and 8 family units (4 sleepers). In total we can sleep 58 guests offering 5-star equivalent opulence out in the African bush. In recent years whilst adding more tents and renovating some of the older ones we have gone with the option of replacing the canvas walls of the tents with brick and mortar. Of these newer tents there are five luxury standard tents and two luxury family units.
Relax in the pool overlooking the bush or in the open-plan thatched guest lounge where you will also find the bar.
Breakfast (sometimes even set up in the bush), lunch and dinner are provided daily. On fine summer nights and balmy winter evenings we will treat you to an outdoor buffet-style dinner around a crackling fire in our African boma, an experience which is sure to be one of many highlights of your stay.
The Game Reserve & Activities
Our Springbok Lodge is situated in the Nambiti Private Game Reserve, a conservancy offering 22 000 acres of pristine, Malaria-free bushveld. The Reserve is home to the Big Five, as well as cheetah, hippo and over 30 species of plains game. Nature lovers will enjoy the area’s biodiversity, with Thornveld and majestic Acacia trees complementing extensive grasslands which mirror the plains of Central Africa. The abundant natural water system, with perennial rivers and the beautiful waterfall and cascades on the Sundays River, makes for a unique sanctuary, attracting several rare bird species and an enviable array of raptors and vultures.
Feast your senses on the magnificent sights, sounds and smells of this untouched African bush. With every dawn, renew your bond with nature as you embark on a safari with your experienced and knowledgeable field guide. Other activities include guided Big 5 bush walks, self-guided walks within the lodge's fenced area, fishing, volleyball and croquet, board games and on prior arrangement a Zulu dance performance, battlefield tours, leisurely drives to the Drakensberg, golfing, a helicopter flight or hot air ballooning and more.
Torgos Lodge
Adjoining the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in South Africa, our casual Torgos Lodge is situated alongside the C15 route, just 7 km from the Mata-Mata border post in Namibia, and located within a 11000 hectar game camp hosting a wide variety of game, notably gemsbok, blue wildebeest, springbuck, eland and kudu to name a few. There is also abundant bird life for the avid bird watchers, including a breeding vulture colony. The surroundings are typical of the Kalahari region with the dry Auob River bed lined by large camelthorn trees, red sand dunes and sparse vegetation. This makes our safari lodge the ideal stop over on your travel route to and from the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and an ideal destination for a few days of relaxation in the Kalahari.
Our Safari Accommodation
We offer 10 en-suite units sleeping two people each on twin beds. There are eight standard tented or stone chalets and two luxury, air-conditioned stone chalets. Four units have basic self-catering facilities. Our accommodation can be booked either as bed and breakfast, on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis or as self-catering.
Facilities
Set at the dry Auob River bed, our stylish, stone and thatched Lapa main building houses a lounge, bar and dining area where breakfast and dinner are served. Lunches or lunch packs can be provided on request. Outside the Lapa is a large stone terrace, a group barbeque area (braai Boma) and a swimming pool overlooking a waterhole in the riverbed where a variety of game can be seen.
Activities
Book a sundowner game drive to the top of a red Kalahari dune while searching for wild animals, mostly small and large antilopes. Refreshments and light snacks are included.
Perfect for general photography. Take an unguided walk into the veld from the lodge, either into the dunes or along the river bed and experience first-hand every detail of nature, from the birds and animals, to plants, seeds, animal tracks and smaller forms of life.
Back at the lodge, sit outside in the evenings, look up and touch the stars! With its clear skies, no pollution or any artificial light, the Kalahari is one of the best places for stargazing.
Tsowa Safari Island
Tsowa means new beginnings, which is what you will find on this pristine Tsowa Safari Island in the middle of the mighty Zambezi River, 35 km west of Victoria Falls. A surreal place, the whispers of this majestic river are broken only by occasional calls of the African fish eagle. In a camp fringed by a beautiful forest, a soft path leads to a cluster of century old baobabs. This is our safari island Tsowa, sensitively situated within the Zambezi National Park.
Our Accommodation
This luxury modern day explorer's camp, Tsowa Safari Island offers 8 luxury safari tents with en-suite indoor and outdoor showers. Each safari tent is carefully positioned in the shade of the forest to ensure guest privacy and to maximize the river views.
It is a great privilege and honour to have been awarded the concession to develop a camp on Tsowa Safari Island and for this reason every care and consideration has been taken to position the 8 eco-friendly luxury tents to create minimal environmental impact and blend into the natural surroundings as much as possible while giving guests the chance to appreciate the trees, river, wild animals and birds of the Zambezi National Park.
The camp can only be accessed by pre-booked transfers. Guests are transferred in closed air-conditioned vehicles to our private entrance to the Zambezi National Park, where they will be met by a guide and transferred in an open 4x4 vehicle to the river's edge. From here it is a quick boat trip across to the island.
Activities
There are three distinct seasons in Zimbabwe. The dry season, April to October, is the best time for game viewing. The wet season is from November to March, when the river is at its highest and the Victoria Falls are most spectacular and migrant birds are prolific.
A river cruise is offered in the late afternoon to enjoy the spectacular sunsets along the Zambezi River. Guests can enjoy drinks and snacks with our guides on our comfortable river cruiser while keeping an eye out for game coming down to drink at the banks of the river. There is nothing like sipping a sundowner while watching elephants come to drink on the river bank!
Early morning game drives are offered through this scenically beautiful national park. They last approximately 3 to 4 hours and include a refreshment stop at one of our favourite view points. The Zambezi National Park is home to large herds of elephant, buffalo, lion, hyena, giraffe and numerous antelope species.
We offer a host more activities, ranging from day trips to Victoria Falls, guided canoeing and guided island walks to guided game walks and fishing, with September to October being a superb fishing season.
