This is where time slows down to give you the relaxation and peace you need for a restful stay at the water's edge in South Africa's Overberg region, ca. a 2.5 hours drive from Cape Town. This tranquil setting within the Lower breede River Conservancy area attracts a vast variety of bird life. One of which is the protected Blue Crane (the national bird of South Africa) which can be spotted on the gravel road winding through the farmands leading to the hotel.

Our Accommodation

We have in total 32 bedrooms, including houseboats! Choose between double / twin and triple rooms as well as a large family room. All units at the hotel are equipped with modern amenities for your convenience such as a TV, a bar fridge and a tea/coffee station, to name a few. Apart from one small room each of our guest rooms has a patio or deck with a seating area.

Our Facilities & Activities

If you enjoy water sports you might want to explore the river in our 2-seater canoes, in pedalos (paddle boats) or on a cruise while you can identify the many birds in our area. If you would like to explore our region further we recommend a visit to the De Hoop Nature Reserve which is a 30 minutes drive away and offers e.g. game watching, seasonal whale watching, clear rock pools, hiking paths and mountain biking.

Other outdoor facilities include a volley ball net and a croquet set, trampolines and a jungle gym. In summer cool off in the pool or enjoy a refreshing drink on the terrace, in the colder winter evenings warm up by the fire in the dining room or in our fully licensed Moxie's pub.

There are also plenty seating areas in our hotel where you can enjoy something to eat or drink with lovely views of the river. Apart from the formal dining room our eating areas include a covered deck and outside terrace as well as an enclosed veranda (glasshouse). Our meals are best described as South African home cooking and dinners. Matoppo Inn

Matoppo Inn

This wonderfully restored 17th-century drostdy building nestles inside a huge, verdant garden estate with a pool and in the midst of the Great Karoo. It is an elegant, urban retreat with a romantic history, a distinct sense of design and a dedication to service quality. Matoppo aan de wagenweg offers luxurious accommodation in Beaufort West in the piece and serenity of a spacious Karoo environment, whether you are here on holiday, for pleasure or on business.

Our Accommodation

Choose between the antique guest rooms, the family units and a room for the disabled. All tastefully, individually decorated rooms are air-conditioned and equipped with a bar fridge, tea/coffee facilities, satellite TV, hairdryer and electric blankets.

Beautiful facilities for functions, weddings or a conference are also available.

Dining

Breakfast, lunch and supper are served in the dining area dating from the 1830s. High wooden ceilings evoke a bygone era, while big sash windows let fresh Karoo air and sunlight into the space where shining yellow wood floors previously hosted great meals, state functions and balls.

In the summer, you can dine on Karoo cuisine in the courtyard or in the comfort of your own air-conditioned room. To keep the Karoo winter chill at bay, dinner is served beside a roaring wood fire. Chefs produce a three-course meal based on a menu option made by you. Please make your dinner reservations prior to arrival.

Short History

Today known as Matoppo Inn, Matoppo House has a long and rich history that dates back to around 1835. It is one of Beaufort West's most magnificent and stunning historical homes, stark in its simplicity. The main home was erected for Magistrate Johannes Jacobus Meintjies, the famous Andries Stockenström's son-in-law. Though it was Meintjies' private residence and hence not technically a 'drostdy' (official residence of a landdrost or magistrate), it has been known by that term for a long time.

Because it quickly became the town's social center, Meintjies Street, which leads to the gate, was extended to 80 feet (24,4 meters), the same width as the main street, so carriages could turn at the gate. Later, the street was transformed into a lively market with a smithy. Today Matoppo House serves as a pet-friendly guesthouse.

Situated midway between Johannesburg and Durban, our child-friendly lodge is one of the few destinations with a panoramic vista of the Drakensberg's most famous feature, the Amphitheatre escarpment.

Established in June 2000 by the Carte family, Montusi Mountain Lodge has created a unique opportunity for you to indulge in the freedom of the wild Drakensberg experience. It is the perfect place to simply wind down and enjoy our little bit of paradise while recharging your batteries, or getting involved with some of the activities.

All the suites are equipped with tea and coffee making facilities as well as a bar fridge. A minibar facility in the suite is available upon request.

Our comfortably ambient restaurant with log fireplace is renowned for much praised, sumptuous local cuisine with innovative menus. In summer we dine outside on the Phumleni with the Amphitheatre view enchanting our guests while you enjoy delicious meals. Dinners are a three-course meal served in the dining room at the main lodge.

Our Activities

The art of doing nothing is a sought after pastime which can be enjoyed at our Montusi Mountain Lodge. There is no pressure and no wake-up calls (no telephone in the room). Join us and enjoy the beautiful Drakensberg mountains from our luxury setting where you can be as active or relaxed as you choose.

The outdoor activities offered range from horse riding, hiking, birding, swimming, fishing, mountain biking and trail running to tennis and full moon walks. Alternatively relax by doing yoga or enjoying a massage, an hour or two of complete bliss await.

We believe that preservation is an integral part of conservation in the Northern Drakensberg. With this in mind, over the last 10 years invasive wattle trees have been eradicated from Montusi and the area rehabilitated by planting indigenous trees. This effort has culminated in the indigenous forests, and resultant indigenous birdlife, flourishing. Additionally, this has seen the return of mountain reedbuck, Vaal rhebuck, bushbuck and the elusive eland that have begun to populate this area once inhabited by the cultural group of the San.

Pendennis Farm

Pendennis Farm

Only about 100 kilometers from Cape Town close to the village Villiersdorp in the breathtaking beautiful valley Bossieveld lies Pendennis Farm. It was established in 1875 and the Cape Dutch farmhouse was built shortly afterwards. The name Pendennis is unique for this part of the world, as it’s the only English farm name you will find in the area. The reason for this being that the title deed was granted during the British governance of the Cape in 1855. It is a reference to Pendennis Castle in Cornwall - a fort from the 16th century to defend the coast.

Today on 42 hectares grapes (Pinotage, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon), apples and olives are grown. Sheep, cows, ostriches, and horses spend their days happily grazing in a picturesque setting.

Accommodation at Pendennis

The Pink Lady is a charming old farmhouse that has been restored to its former glory. The house has 4 beautiful bedrooms with two large bathrooms to share. It can accommodate up to 12 people comfortably and has a sunny day lounge in the back to relax in. This holiday house has long passages, high ceilings, and a spacious open plan lounge and kitchen. The surrounding space has a wrap-around garden with a braai (barbecue) area and a small fire pit. Free Wi-Fi is available as well.

Another accommodation option at the Pendennis farm premises is a charming Lemon Cottage. It offers a comfortable stay for 4 guests. The newly renovated cottage consists of a small kitchen, two bedrooms and an open plan dining-lounge area. This cottage is fenced, has a cute garden and also offers free Wi-Fi.

The Lavender Cottage is the oldest building in the valley. This historic cottage has a lovely bathroom with a bath and shower. The equipped kitchen leads to a comfy living room area. The bedroom is spacious with plenty of light and stunning views. The newly renovated cottage offers a comfortable stay for 2 people and has a fully fenced garden as well as free Wi-Fi.

Teepee Village is formed currently by two fun, "glamping" style tents where you find everything for your comfort. Watch the stars and the Milky Way while getting cozy around the fireplace provided. Showers and toilets are available just nearby. This is a summer type of accommodation which you need to remember when planning your stay at Pendennis.

Dasbos Barn

A historic blacksmith barn from 1903, “Dasbos Barn” has been renovated and is today a perfect setting for any event like birthday parties, company functions and weddings. There is seating for 65 guests and the Pendennis team can provide anything you need to make your event special.

The stunning venue has its own ceremony and reception area, outside bar, restrooms, spacious and fully kitted kitchen for preparing or warming food, and a scullery in the back.

Game drives on our safaris traverse an area of 10 000 hectares (24 700 acres) and strict vehicle limits at sightings ensure the exclusivity of your game viewing experience. Off-road driving on most areas enables the best possible view of any exceptional sighting and rangers are constantly in 2-way radio communication with each other to keep track of animal movements. Our experienced guides will not only use all their vast knowledge and bush craft to try and show you the famous Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo) and other plains game such as zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, but they will do their best to paint memories of an Africa that will never fade away.

Dining at Pondoro promises a fusion of Traditional African Cuisine and modern European trends. Vegetarians are specially catered for. To compliment the food, wine can be selected from our extensive wine cellar. Our bar also stocks a selection of some of the finest Whiskies in the world; whether you’re looking for an exquisite blend or smoky single malt. After dinner you’ll be able to relax with a Cuban cigar and enjoy a glass of Port or Cognac, should that be your fancy. All meals are served on a wooden deck high up in the tree canopy overlooking the Olifants River. An unforgettable bush dinner will await those who stay for a third night.

Serenity Spa at Pondoro Game Lodge offers an indulgent escape from the wild, where one is surrounded by elegant décor and cascading waterfalls to create a relaxing ambient environment. Riverman Cabin

Riverman Cabin

Nestled in the beautiful valley of Tonteldoos, Riverman Cabin is the perfect place to exchange traffic for donkeys lazily grazing, rushed lunches for a picnic in the veld and city noises for an evening song, sung by crickets and orchestrated by frogs. Riverman Cabin is situated in the Tonteldoos Valley, +-30 km northeast of Dullstroom, which is approximately a 3-hour drive from Johannesburg.

Riverman Cabin consists of seven independent cabins – three of which are stone cabins, one brick cabin, and the other three are wooden cabins.

All the cabins are fully furnished and equipped for a homely self-catering experience. All the cabins are open plan with cosy indoor fireplaces, as well as private, external braai areas with complimentary wood stocked for the first night.

Riverman Cabin is a pet-friendly establishment.

The roads become slippery when wet. We recommend vehicles with a high ground clearance. Guests travelling with low vehicles must take extra care on the gravel road – we are in Tonteldoos, 30kms of gravel road from Dullstroom (only 20kms gravel road if you travel via Middelburg/Stoffberg).
