Our accommodation (tents at the waterhole) are perfect for those who enjoy the closeness of the water’s edge. All safari tents are surrounded by true Karoo fynbos. Set only a few metres away from the waterhole, they provide an elevated view of the surroundings and also offer great views over the whole lodge area. 

The Family units can accommodate a family of up to 5 people and have a spacious main room as well as a children’s room with a shared en-suite bathroom separating the two rooms. The family tents also provide an elevated view of the surroundings with the panorama of the Swartberg Mountains. The 5 hectare waterhole is in walking distance. One might even be lucky enough to spot wildlife in the distance. 

Our Facilities

A residents-only swimming pool with deck chairs is conveniently located near the tents. The pool also overlooks our waterhole and the great Swartberg Mountains. To avoid disturbing the wildlife, no swimming is allowed in the waterhole. 

The Spa@Buffelsdrift has three professionally trained permanent therapists of which two at a time are onsite to provide you with the feeling of being in nature whilst enjoying a relaxing and revitalizing treatment. Clos Malverne is truly a family affair. Besides overseeing the entire operation, Seymour and his wife Sophia, have spent enormous time and effort successfully developing international markets for their wine estate. Seymour’s daughter, Belinda Pritchard-Quickelberge, makes sure that Clos Malverne’s visitors are well looked after and pampered at the day spa, also situated on the estate. Even Seymour’s mother has a role to play, if in name only. Auret, the flagship wine of the range, is her maiden name, and Seymour’s middle name. 

Our Wines 

We practice a careful “handmade” style of winemaking, with minimum interference by the winemaking staff, resulting in elegant wines, which are expressive of their terroir. We are one of only a handful of wineries in the world that remain true to the traditional and time-honoured way of using a basket press. Basket pressing is one of the oldest methods of pressing grapes; the Ancient Greeks and Romans developed it, later perfected by the French, basket presses were one of the earliest styles of a mechanical press, and using a basket press means that it is extremely time consuming. The results are soft, elegant wines of great complexity. 

Open fermenting cement “kuipe” is also used and their grape-skin caps are punched-down by hand. The cellar can effectively manage the crush and vinification of up to 400 tons of grapes, although the yields from the vineyards are presently producing at 350 tons per annum. Small French and American oak casks are used to mature the premium red wines. 

Our Vinyards 

Shrouded in the misty veils of the Devon Valley, lies the 27 hectares that is Clos Malverne’s premises. The Devon Valley microclimate is the key to the quality of the grapes grown in this serene environment. Although the valley is shallow it acts as a natural receptacle for the mists that linger around Stellenbosch in the early morning hours of summer. The valley is cooler than surrounding areas, significantly lengthening the ripening season, resulting in grapes of ideal ripeness. 

Our vineyards reside on the gentle slopes of the valley to ensure the most favourable exposure to sunshine and are located on two separate properties in near vicinity of one another, each selected by degree of varietal affinity to the particular soil type. Dwars-in-die-Weg has 11 hectares under vine, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc. All vines are drip irrigated using water from the farm dam. Clos Malverne’s 12 hectares of vineyards, which include plantings of Pinotage, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, also makes use of drip irrigation.

Now serving upmarket, comfort food and rustic, wood-fired pizzas - we are opening our arms to all. Our new affordable menu, together with our broad wine list caters for every taste since the recent extension of the ever popular Devonet range of wines. Because of the beautiful view, the outside seating area has also been expanded to ensure no more fist fights over the front row seats.  Join us for an unforgettable, mouth-watering taste sensation! 

Our popular Winelands destination has developed a devoted following since 2009 for its fresh, seasonal and easy, contemporary cuisine prepared by executive chef Brendan Stein and his team of expert chefs. Situated on our scenic wine estate, our Clos Malverne Guesthouse offers a relaxing stay within the beautiful Devon Valley just 7.5 km northwest of Stellenbosch in South Africa's Cape winelands.

Pondoro Game Lodge also has three tastefully designed chalets decorated in keeping with the African aesthetic and overlooking the Olifants River. All chalets have en-suite bathrooms (with a shower and bath overlooking the river), air-conditioning, mosquito nets and a wooden deck. 

Pondoro boasts an overnight Treehouse Hide Experience as well. This hide overlooks a spotlit waterhole in the middle of the bush and is a must for those with a taste for adventure. Your adventure will begin after dinner with a late night drive to the hide. You will be picked up again during the morning safari.

With no boundary fences between Balule Private Nature Reserve (50 000ha) and the Kruger National Park a great diversity of wildlife is found here. Game drives on our safaris traverse an area of 10 000 hectares (24 700 acres) and strict vehicle limits at sightings ensure the exclusivity of your game viewing experience. Off-road driving on most areas enables the best possible view of any exceptional sighting and rangers are constantly in 2-way radio communication with each other to keep track of animal movements. Our experienced guides will not only use all their vast knowledge and bush craft to try and show you the famous Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo) and other plains game such as zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, but they will do their best to paint memories of an Africa that will never fade away.

Pumba Private Game Reserve 

Awake to the sounds of the African bush veld as the sun makes its appearance on the horizon bringing with it the prospect of another perfect day. Eco friendly Pumba Private Game Reserve, a proud member of the Green Leaf Conservation Initiative, is set 19 km southwest of Makhanda (also known as Grahamstown) and an hour from Gqeberha, in the malaria-free Eastern Cape, and provides an intimate African safari experience never to be forgotten.

The reserve is home to Africa’s Big Five as well as rare white lions, hippos, hyenas, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, various antelopes and more than 300 bird species. Feel the heartbeat of nature as you explore the reserve in custom land rovers or on guided walking safaris.

Msenge Bush Lodge offers 11, glassed enclosed, thatched chalets, which flow naturally into the African Bushveld, offering intimate and private accommodation.
