About the Area
Zambia, especially the Luangwa Valley, is famous for its incredible walking safaris. Here, our guests discover the environment on foot, enjoying eye-opening and exciting sightings. Experts have dubbed the South Luangwa one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world. The concentration of game around the Luangwa River and its oxbow lagoons is among the most productive in Africa, and is frequently referred to as "The Valley of the Leopard".
The countryside in the Luangwa Valley is remarkable. The vegetation is characterized by riverine forest which is wonderfully green all year round. The South Luangwa National Park offers spectacular wildlife viewing and is recognized as one of the best parks in Africa to encounter the elusive leopard. Elephants abound and expansive herds of buffalo are often seen. The Luangwa River is home to crocodile and sizeable pods of hippo.
One of the most well-known endemic species in the Luangwa Valley is the Thorneycroft's giraffe. Their distinctive pattern consists of large, irregular shaped brown to black patches separated by white to yellow bands.

Each room has a large fireplace between the bed and the large bath tub which has been placed close to the glass wall allowing for excellent views into the African bush.
Our Safaris
Thanks to our exclusivity, your guided safari is not disturbed by large groups of other game vehicles and viewers. Our proximity to the ocean also ensures that we are the only game reserve in the region to have thick grasslands interspersed with tall trees. This allows for unparalleled game viewing.
Hopewell Private Game Reserve exists on reclaimed farm land which, generations ago, was the natural environment of the Big Five and a host of other big game but was overtaken by farming. Our private Eden covers a 6600-acre reserve where the owners have made a principled conservation investment to restore and regenerate the farm land to its natural state.
On a safari today, just as 250 years ago, you are likely to encounter elephants, buffalos, hippos, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, leopard, warthogs, various antelopes and indigenous species that have been carefully re-introduced to maintain a balanced eco-system. By visiting our Hopewell Private Game Reserve you too are helping to preserve Africa’s natural beauty.

Indigo Safaris
Indigo Safaris offers a wide range of day trips and activities from Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and Livingstone in Zambia, with helicopter rides, rafting, microlight flights, bungee jumping, canoeing, sedate river cruises, game drives in nearby reserves or in neighbouring Botswana, and transfers.
We can also book a range of hand-picked accommodation options.
About Zimbabwe
The majestic Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwean/Zambian border is within easy reach of Chobe National Park, Botswana, by road, has direct flights from Namibia and South Africa, and is a short drive from the excellent Hwange National Park, making it easy to combine destinations in one unforgettable safari itinerary.
The largest sheet of falling water in the world, twice as high as Niagara Falls, and 1,708 metres long, it is the biggest waterfall in the world, and considered one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The rumble of the falls can be heard from up to 40 kilometres away and the spray, up to about half a kilometre high when the Zambezi River is in full flood, can be seen from a distance of almost 50km.
A guided or unguided tour of the falls on the Zimbabwe side, the longer of the two, takes around two hours. Victoria Falls is an extremely popular destination due to the amazing amount of activities on offer, making it suitable for every type of traveller. Take a helicopter flight or a microlight over the falls for a breath-taking bird's-eye view of Mosi-oa-Tunya - 'The Smoke That Thunders’ or go white-water rafting downstream of the falls for what is considered the best one-day white water rafting in the world. Adrenaline junkies can also gorge swing and bungee jump from Livingstone Bridge.
For a more sedate experience, canoe the tranquil waters of the Zambezi upstream from the falls to see hippos, crocs, and, if you are lucky, a raft of elephants crossing to the islands in the middle, or take a sundowner cruise with a wildlife guide and observe the life on the river banks whilst enjoying nibbles and sipping a G&T. For more olfactive delights, High Tea at Victoria Falls Hotel, the oldest hotel in the country and a colonial classic, is a must, as is dinner at Jungle Junction. You can browse the outdoor craft market, have dinner on the rails on board the Bushtracks Express, or look for rhinos in a game reserve a few kilometres outside town.
We work with a range of guest houses and hotels in Victoria Falls town, all well-located for those wishing to have an action-packed stay.
The Zambezi National Park is a 45-minutes drive away and offers some great wildlife encounters with four of the "Big Five" (no rhinos), and a good variety of plains game. It is also home to a few sublime lodges and tented camps on the sandy river bank or an island. Thus, if you are not fussed about doing lots of activities from town, you can stay up in the national park, enjoy the wildlife, some canoeing, fishing, or river cruising, and then pop into town to see the falls for half a day.
Indigo Safaris
Having lived and worked in KZN, the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal, as a diving and safari guide since 2004, we have in-depth knowledge of the Zululand safari and scuba scene.
From Protea Banks in the south of the region, up to the border with Mozambique and beyond, we know all the best diving and safari spots, and can arrange tailor-made diving and safari trips and also cover the phenomenal annual Sardine Run.
About Zululand
KwaZulu-Natal, roughly the size of Portugal, has a plethora of attractions and something for everyone. With excellent safari, diving, beaches, historical tours and trekking on offer, this is one of the most diverse areas in South Africa.
The province contains rich areas of biodiversity of a range of flora and fauna. The iSimangaliso Wetland Park and the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A number of game reserves offer superb safari opportunities, at lower costs and with less visitors than comparable lodges in the world-renowned Kruger area in the northeast of South Africa.
The narrow lowland region along the Indian Ocean coast has some stunning and often empty beaches and some of the best big fish diving in the world and it's sub-tropical climate makes it an ideal destination year round.
The undulating plateau of the central Natal Midlands and the Battlefields area are loaded with historical sites. The uKhahlamba Drakensberg Mountains form a solid basalt wall rising over 3,000 metres alongside the Lesotho border and offer superb treks and ancient rock art sites, whilst the Lebombo Mountains form a low parallel range of ancient granite running southward from eSwatini.
Kololo Game Reserve
Kololo is a big nature reserve where harmless African wildlife roams free. The Western part in the reserve is assigned to the accommodation. From your chalet or villa you can walk or bike freely and safely into the reserve. Furthermore Kololo Game Reserve forms part of Welgevonden Game Reserve, an even bigger nature reserve and home to the Big Five and many other African animal species, big and small. Kololo has a private gate into Welgevonden. In an open but roofed safari vehicle we take you there to observe wildlife and nature.
Staying at Kololo is truly an adventure: you are surrounded by the African bush where wild animals roam free. Kudu, wildebeest, impala, warthogs regularly cross your path, running past the terrace of your chalet or villa looking for food and water. And you can walk and bike freely in the reserve, coming eye to eye with the animals.
The accommodation consists of 15 chalets en villa’s that offer space to 2, 4 or 6 persons. All beautifully situated in the bush or the parklike landscape. Each accommodation has a private shower and separate toilet per room, a veranda and a fully equipped (outdoor) kitchen, including tea/coffee facilities and of course free wifi.
Every day something extraordinary, interesting, beautiful, funny happens at Kololo. Nature has a lot to tell. But also our people. And our guests. They all have stories that we like to share.
