Namib Outpost
In the middle of the 7,000 hectare private nature reserve of the Desert Homestead Lodge, bordering the Unesco World Heritage Site Namib Sand Sea, Namib Outpost opens its gates and welcomes you with casual, natural hospitality. In the adjacent wide plains you can often watch cheetah roaming the endless grass savannahs.
We cordially invite our guests to take advantage of all the activities offered by the Desert Homestead Lodge. Our facilities include a pool with sundeck, a lounge area and a restaurant. We also offer horse riding, hot-air balloon rides, sundowner drives, Sossusvlei and Naukluft excursions.
Our Accommodation
Enjoy the impressive panoramic view from one of the 12 guest houses, picturesquely situated at the foot of a mountain.
The Superior Unit of Namib Outpost was built in the style of a hideaway. A special place awaits you on approx. 90 square meters of living space. Experience the panorama of the Namib, lined with the mountains and the red dunes of Sossusvlei from the living room through a huge window, or from the 2.80 meter wide four-poster bed in the bedroom. You enter your screened, shady terrace through a separate door, which offers you a breathtaking view of the landscape or the starry sky. The superior unit is a bit remote from the other houses and will let you experience the silence and expanse of the Namib desert.
Sun Catchers Hot-Air Ballooning
Situated near Hoedspruit and Kruger Park, our team from Sun Catchers offer hour-long hot air balloon flights over the scenic landscape west of Hoedspruit at the foot of the Drakensberg Escarpment, and, if you’re lucky, some wildlife will provide spectacular photo opportunities. When the weather allows, we offer flights over a private nature and game reserve. Our professional pilots and crew will ensure a safe, enjoyable and informative adventure.
We can arrange transfers from your accommodation in the Hoedspruit, Klaserie, Thornybush or Balule areas to our launch site. Since 2003, our experienced company has taken 10.000+ passengers on balloon flights. Come aboard for your experience of a lifetime.
Our Balloon Ride
We meet before sunrise where coffee is served while you watch your eight-storey high balloon being inflated and prepared for flight. After a short safety briefing you should be airborne in time to witness the sunrise from a bird's eye view. While the pilot changes altitude in search of favourable wind directions and speeds, the height above ground will vary between skimming the tree-tops to as high as 2 000 feet.
The flight duration is about an hour and towards the end of the flight the pilot will select a suitable landing site. The landing is an exciting event because the basket meets the earth at whatever speed the surface wind is at the time. Light airs allow the softest of landings while fresh breezes necessitate a “positive” landing so that the basket can serve as an anchor to slow the envelope down. If not already at the landing site, the ground crew will soon arrive to deflate and pack the balloon while passengers enjoy fruit juice and sparkling wine.
