NamibRand Family Hideout

NamibRand Family Hideout

Only you and the desert. Our NamibRand Family Hideout is a converted and deserted home of Karakul sheep farmers which is remotely situated on the farm Stellarine on the NamibRand Nature Reserve, one of Southern Africa’s largest private nature reserves.

Our Accommodation

As the sole occupier of our charming and authentic farmhouse, you will be able to appreciate quality time spent alone with your family or friends. The Hideout is simply yet comfortably equipped for your essential needs and even wheelchair-friendly. It is a solid haven from the sometimes harsh desert conditions and evidence of bygone farming days still remains in the old walls, fences and outbuildings, which are almost buried by ever-shifting sand dunes.

Accommodation is mostly on a self-catering basis, but we gladly prepare meals such as half board or full board if booked well in advance.

We added an exclusive campsite to our accommodation offerings. Out of sight and earshot of each other, Campsite Orion and Campsite Venus are each nestled into the dunes, with a waterhole for animals and birds. The views are stunning and you are truly alone with nature, but have modern camping facilities such as flush toilets and solar-heated hot showers. Ample shade is provided for protection from the Namibian sun and canvas roller blinds for wind protection.

Opened in March 2019, campsite Jupiter is located in its own private dune valley and has the same facilities as the other two campsites; however it has an enlarged wooden deck with a roof and wind protection, a charging station for all your devices as well as a drinking waterhole for animals. It is also fully wheelchair-accessible.

Please note that limited cellphone coverage and Wi-Fi can be located only 5 kilometres away at the base camp in case of an emergency.

Activities

Enjoy the spectacular views over the vast plains and ancient blue mountain ranges after enjoying one of our activities on offer, e.g. 4×4 dune drives or educational walks with our qualified guide into the glowing red dunes of the Namib Desert for a close encounter with the fascinating variety of fauna and flora. The kids will love dune-boarding and the endless open spaces, or chasing after beetles and lizards scuttling over the sand dunes.

A small water-hole just 50 metres from the veranda attracts a myriad of birdlife as well as oryx antelopes, springboks, zebras, bat-eared foxes, porcupines and other African wildlife. With a bit of luck, you might even see giraffes! The exceptional surroundings and clarity of the air provide endless opportunities for photography by day and fantastic star gazing at night.

Slow down, leave the stress and pace of our high-tech world behind you for a while and relax around an open fire in the silence of the multi-coloured sunset, punctuated only by the click of barking geckos. Whilst on holiday in Namibia, here in the vast and ancient Namib Desert, nature still reigns supreme.

Perfect for general photography. Take an unguided walk into the veld from the lodge, either into the dunes or along the river bed and experience first-hand every detail of nature, from the birds and animals, to plants, seeds, animal tracks and smaller forms of life.

Back at the lodge, sit outside in the evenings, look up and touch the stars! With its clear skies, no pollution or any artificial light, the Kalahari is one of the best places for stargazing.
