Antares Bush Camp & Safaris

Antares Bush Camp & Safaris

This small exclusive bush camp is set within the open system of the Greater Kruger National Park. In the northern section of the 60 000 Ha Balule Nature Reserve is an area of land that had its origins in small scale agriculture. The Balule Nature Reserve is made up of several regions of which Grietjie is one of the founding members, and is bordered to the north by the town of Phalaborwa and in the south by Hoedspruit. To the east lie the Klaserie and Timbavati reserves and the Kruger National Park, while in the west the R40 National road creates a logical boundary that has effectively become the western boundary of the Greater Kruger National Park.

With the reserve part of the open system now, Antares Bush Camp & Safaris can boast almost all the game species that you could expect to find in the Kruger National Park, although species such as eland, roan antelope and a few others are highly unlikely to be encountered due to their habitat preferences. Regular sightings of elephant and lions occur at the waterhole just in front of the camp along with a large variety of general game and birdlife. Our bird list is close to 300 species and rarities such as Pel’s fishing owl, African finfoot and a few other can be seen along the river. With the development of Umgede hide at the water’s edge there is a great opportunity to get close to the action. With free Wi-Fi available throughout the camp, our guests will have the luxury of being able to video their favourite sightings and send them home to their jealous families and friends.

Our Accommodation

Each of the five bedrooms have an en-suite bathroom with outside shower allowing you to enjoy those starry nights after a magical game drive where you may have been lucky enough to see an elusive leopard. One of the bedrooms is set up as a family room, a queen bed for mum and dad and at the other end an adjoining room with a bunk bed, ensuring that even families with younger children can enjoy our hospitality.

Inside the main building guests can make use of the large kitchen equipped with a large electric oven and 5-ring gas hob. Alternatively, Antares offers you the opportunity to request a chef at an additional fee who will come on site and prepare all your meals for you, allowing you to relax and enjoy the bush to its fullest. You will still be responsible for providing all the food and beverage requirements for your party. Please note that as we are not a licensed facility, all guests will need to supply their own beverages.

About the Area

The Grietjie region, which is where we are located, is a 3000 Ha reserve that had its humble beginnings as a farming community. Over the past 20 years or so the region has transformed from an agricultural background to one that is well-sought after as a Big 5 Nature Reserve. Our boundary fences have all been removed and we have expanded our traversing area which now covers almost 7500 Ha and includes over 10kms of Olifant’s River frontage. The vegetation is a mixture of Marula/Knobthorn savannah veld and Mopane veld. There are a number of small granite/syenite kopjies (small hill made up of rocky boulders) on the reserve and the largest hill is named “Grietjie Berg” after which the reserve gets its name.

Our winter months produce a comfortable environment to explore the bush in, with dry and relatively warm days. We don’t experience extremely cold conditions although the clear skies at night can make the temperature drop a little especially nearer the river. During the summer we expect to receive our annual rainfall between October and April and the day time temperatures can get very high, but this just gives you the perfect excuse to laze away in the plunge pool while you watch the animals come down to the waterhole to quench their thirst.

Etusis Lodge

Welcome to the jewel of the Otjipatera Mountains. The Etusis Lodge is a small oasis in the heart of our nature reserve. A row of grass-covered buildings built with natural stone from Etusis is your retreat after a long journey or the day's excursions.

The homely Etusis Lodge is situated in a beautiful private game reserve 40 km from Karibib and offers a choice of accommodation ranging from camping and self-catering to private bungalows with half board, some of which are wheelchair-accessible. Relax at the pool to the sounds of nature or enjoy many activities, e.g. game drives, nature walks or horse riding.

Our Facilities

At the heart of the property is our restaurant and main building with the bar under a camel thorn tree. A sundowner has never tasted better - when you step out onto the terrace, you can enjoy the view of our embankment with the small waterhole, which is frequented by kudus, zebras and baboons. Behind it rises the Etusis marble mountains and the mighty Otjipatera massif.

Our grass roof bungalows are spread around our pool. A wonderful opportunity to cool off, especially during the warm lunchtime. A table tennis table offers further variety. Our small museum with artifacts from Etusis and the surrounding area from nature or history invites you to visit and also serves as a room for conferences.

We have a lot to offer - don't just come for one night but rather stay with us for two, or even better, three nights, giving you the chance to really experience Etusis and pursue various activities. To travel the 17km from the C32 only for one night in our - admittedly very beautiful - bungalows would be a shame.

Indigo Safaris Zimbabwe

Indigo Safaris

Indigo Safaris offers a wide range of day trips and activities from Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and Livingstone in Zambia, with helicopter rides, rafting, microlight flights, bungee jumping, canoeing, sedate river cruises, game drives in nearby reserves or in neighbouring Botswana, and transfers.

We can also book a range of hand-picked accommodation options.

About Zimbabwe

The majestic Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwean/Zambian border is within easy reach of Chobe National Park, Botswana, by road, has direct flights from Namibia and South Africa, and is a short drive from the excellent Hwange National Park, making it easy to combine destinations in one unforgettable safari itinerary.

The largest sheet of falling water in the world, twice as high as Niagara Falls, and 1,708 metres long, it is the biggest waterfall in the world, and considered one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The rumble of the falls can be heard from up to 40 kilometres away and the spray, up to about half a kilometre high when the Zambezi River is in full flood, from a distance of almost 50km.

A guided or unguided tour of the falls on the Zimbabwe side, the longer of the two, takes around two hours. Victoria Falls is an extremely popular destination due to the amazing amount of activities on offer, making it suitable for every type of traveller. Take a helicopter flight or a microlight over the falls for a breath-taking bird's-eye view of Mosi-oa-Tunya - 'The Smoke That Thunders’ or go white-water rafting downstream of the falls for what is considered the best one-day white water rafting in the world. Adrenaline junkies can also gorge swing and bungee jump from Livingstone Bridge.

For a more sedate experience, canoe the tranquil waters of the Zambezi upstream from the falls to see hippos, crocs, and, if you are lucky, a raft of elephants crossing to the islands in the middle, or take a sundowner cruise with a wildlife guide and observe the life on the river banks whilst enjoying nibbles and sipping a G&T. For more olfactive delights, High Tea at Victoria Falls Hotel, the oldest hotel in the country and a colonial classic, is a must, as is dinner at Jungle Junction. You can browse the outdoor craft market, have dinner on the rails on board the Bushtracks Express, or look for rhinos in the Stanley and Livingstone Game Reserve.

We work with a range of guest houses and hotels in Victoria Falls town, all well-located for those wishing to have an action-packed stay. Amongst our favourites are Victoria Falls Hotel, Batonka Guesthouse, and close to town, Victoria Falls Safari Lodge.

45-minutes away, Zambezi National Park offers some great wildlife encounters with four of the "Big Five" (no rhinos), and a good variety of plains game. It is also home to a few sublime lodges and tented camps on the sandy river bank or an island. Thus, if you are not fussed about doing lots of activities from town, you can stay up in the national park, enjoy the wildlife, some canoeing, fishing, or river cruising, and then pop into town to see the falls for half a day.

Indigo Safaris Zululand

Indigo Safaris

Having lived and worked in KZN, KwaZulu Natal, as a diving and safari guide since 2004, we have in-depth knowledge of the Zululand safari and scuba scene.

From Protea Banks in the south of the region, up to the border with Mozambique and beyond, we know all the best diving and safari spots, and can arrange tailor-made diving and safari trips and also cover the phenomenal annual Sardine Run.

About Zululand

KwaZulu-Natal, roughly the size of Portugal, has a plethora of attractions and something for everyone. It is the most diverse area in South Africa, with excellent safari, diving, beaches, historical tours and trekking on offer.

The province contains rich areas of biodiversity of a range of flora and fauna. The iSimangaliso Wetland Park and the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A number of game reserves offer superb safari opportunities, at lower costs and with less visitors than comparable lodges in the world-renowned Kruger area to the north of the country.

The narrow lowland region along the Indian Ocean coast has some stunning and often empty beaches and some of the best big fish diving in the world and it's sub-tropical climate makes it an ideal destination year round.

The undulating plateau of the central Natal Midlands and the Battlefields area are loaded with historical sites. The Drakensberg Mountains form a solid basalt wall rising over 3,000 m alongside the Lesotho border and offer superb treks and ancient rock art sites, and the Lebombo Mountains form a low parallel range of ancient granite running southward from Swaziland.

Kololo Game Reserve

Kololo Game Reserve

Kololo is a big nature reserve where harmless African wildlife roams free. The Western part in the reserve is assigned to the accommodation. From your chalet or villa you can walk or bike freely and safely into the reserve. Furthermore Kololo Game Reserve forms part of Welgevonden Game Reserve, an even bigger nature reserve and home to the Big Five and many other African animal species, big and small. Kololo has a private gate into Welgevonden. In an open but roofed safari vehicle we take you there to observe wildlife and nature.

Staying at Kololo is truly an adventure: you are surrounded by the African bush where wild animals roam free. Kudu, wildebeest, impala, warthogs regularly cross your path, running past the terrace of your chalet or villa looking for food and water. And you can walk and bike freely in the reserve, coming eye to eye with the animals.

The accommodation consists of 15 chalets en villa’s that offer space to 2, 4 or 6 persons. All beautifully situated in the bush or the parklike landscape. Each accommodation has a private shower and separate toilet per room, a veranda and a fully equipped (outdoor) kitchen, including tea/coffee facilities and of course free wifi.

Every day something extraordinary, interesting, beautiful, funny happens at Kololo. Nature has a lot to tell. But also our people. And our guests. They all have stories that we like to share.

The Lake Oanob Resort offers many different types of accommodation: from luxury chalets to en-suite and family rooms over to a special suite and different campsites as well. Most of our accommodation facilities are situated by the lake.

Each luxury chalet has a stunning lake view and includes a living and dining room with comfortable furniture. It has a fully-equipped kitchen, an outside BBQ place and a spacious terrace - with all the comforts and amenities of home.

The family rooms can accommodate a maximum of two adults and two children (up to 12 years of age). There are two single beds for the adults and on the gallery two single beds for the children. Here you can also enjoy the lake view from your own terrace.

The 31 camping sites are partly located at the waterfront, partly in the bush and are suitable for big/small tents as well as cars with roof tents, campers and caravans. Camping areas are all equipped with BBQ facilities, a drinkable water point and electricity. Toilets and showers are in the adjacent ablution blocks with hot water. Some campsites have their own toilet and shower.

Makakatana Bay Lodge

Makakatana Bay Lodge

Where in the world can you explore the magic and wonder of unspoiled beaches, vast wetlands, enjoy game drives and go on an unforgettable boat cruise on an estuary? Makakatana Bay Lodge is set on the banks of Lake St Lucia and the only privately-owned and owner-managed game lodge within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site. Our goal is to show off this unique and pristine wilderness gem, the perfect addition to a typical safari holiday.

Your stay at Makakatana Bay Lodge is designed around exploring the amazing iSimangaliso sanctuary on an open game drive vehicle as well as on our private pontoon boat and by dipping your feet into the warm Indian Ocean. You get to experience all of this on our adventure filled beach, lake and park full-day safaris with our passionate and knowledgeable rangers.

Our Accommodation

The main lodge is the heart of Makakatana and is a communal area with personal service designed for relaxation and comfort. All game drives leave from here, and all meals are served on either the raised deck wrapping around the lodge or at the African Boma alongside. Our staff are always happy to make your stay magical, let us know if you have any special requests. The lodge also has a bar, a stunning “old crab” house which it is affectionately called, and a nearby private bush pool on the edge of Lake St Lucia.

Experience this magnificent area from the comfort of our spacious rooms, set on raised decks within the wilderness of this game park. Our 5 standard rooms are equipped with a private viewing deck, an en-suite bathroom, with a bath and a spacious outdoor shower, and modern conveniences. Set in the dune forest, the grounds surrounding these luxury suites are frequented by warthog, red duiker, nyala, bush babies and a variety of bird life. The two family rooms both sleep a maximum of 4 guests each. The main room has a king bed, and the interleading room has two twin beds. There is a spacious indoor bathroom with a shower that opens onto an outdoor bathroom with a bath and outside shower.

We also have a honeymoon room which is situated privately with views out onto the vlei. Romantic and intimate, this room is the perfect retreat after a day spent in the bush or exploring the magnificent area. It has a romantic outdoor shower as well as a bath fit for two. The private deck is also suitable for private dining, which can be arranged with our lodge manager.
