Cape Gallery

The Cape Gallery

The Cape Gallery in Cape Town specializes in art with origins in South African culture. The exhibitions have a distinct cultural imprint of the African continent and can also pique the interest of visitors' imaginations.

Whether there are paintings, graphics, drawings, sculptures, ceramic pieces of art, lino and woodprints or collectables, the wide and often eclectic mix of pieces of art on display is enhanced by changing exhibitions.

Some History

At 60 Church Street, The Cape Gallery is located in the heart of the old city, just off the Church Street walking mall, and is flanked by colorful Georgian and Dutch facades built by early residents in the 18th and 19th centuries. Some of Cape Town's oldest and most prominent galleries, antique shops and auction houses are hidden behind these facades.

The abiding love of the land is central to the South African painting heritage. The early Cape painters were visual reporters, describing the terrain, flora and fauna of this interesting area, a conservative approach that the gallery's clientele still choose today.

The recent emergence of vibrant street art has given the pieces on show a uniquely African flavor.
