About Ermelo

The town of Ermelo was established on the site of a church built in 1871 by the Reverend Frans Cachet. The site was named after a town named Ermelo situated in the Netherlands. The town was razed to the ground by the British during the Anglo-Boer war, but rebuilding began at the end of the war in 1902. There is a British Anglo-Boer war campsite about 2km from Izimbali Lodge.
The longest stone-arched bridge in the province, the Begin der Lijn Bridge, straddles the Vaal River roughly 30km south of Ermelo. The bridge dates from 1898, when it marked the old border with Swaziland, and it is 124 metres long.

Ermelo boasts magical beauty as it is ideally situated amongst the grass and wetlands region of the Mpumalanga Province. About 35km from Ermelo lies Chrissiesmeer (Lake Chrissie). After good rains, this is the largest natural body of inland water in South Africa, roughly 9km long by 3km wide. In drought times, however, the lake can be reduced to a few pools, inhabited by hundreds of flamingoes.

There are also various cultural attractions to experience such as Ancient Bushmen sites only 5km from Ermelo and the mysterious Heritage Site, Legoya Huts (10km), a collection of stone ruins which date back to between 1500BC and colonial times.

The settlement, which is the largest settlement of it's kind, was declared a National Monument in 1986, and attracts large numbers of visitors.

Ermelo also offers three art galleries including the Izimbali gallery, exhibiting artworks by various South African artists.

Matoppo Inn

Matoppo Inn

This wonderfully restored 17th-century drostdy building nestles inside a huge, verdant garden estate with a pool and in the midst of the Great Karoo. It is an elegant, urban retreat with a romantic history, a distinct sense of design and a dedication to service quality. Matoppo aan de wagenweg offers luxurious accommodation in Beaufort West in the piece and serenity of a spacious Karoo environment, whether you are here on holiday, for pleasure or on business.

Our Accommodation

Choose between the antique guest rooms, the family units and a room for the disabled. All tastefully, individually decorated rooms are air-conditioned and equipped with a bar fridge, tea/coffee facilities, satellite TV, hairdryer and electric blankets.

Beautiful facilities for functions, weddings or a conference are also available.

Breakfast, lunch and supper are served in the dining area dating from the 1830s. High wooden ceilings evoke a bygone era, while big sash windows let fresh Karoo air and sunlight into the space where shining yellow wood floors previously hosted great meals, state functions and balls.

In the summer, you can dine on Karoo cuisine in the courtyard or in the comfort of your own air-conditioned room. To keep the Karoo winter chill at bay, dinner is served beside a roaring wood fire. Chefs produce a three-course meal based on a menu option made by you. Please make your dinner reservations prior to arrival.

Short History

Today known as Matoppo Inn, Matoppo House has a long and rich history that dates back to around 1835. It is one of Beaufort West's most magnificent and stunning historical homes, stark in its simplicity. The main home was erected for Magistrate Johannes Jacobus Meintjies, the famous Andries Stockenström's son-in-law. Though it was Meintjies' private residence and hence not technically a 'drostdy' (official residence of a landdrost or magistrate), it has been known by that term for a long time.

Because it quickly became the town's social center, Meintjies Street, which leads to the gate, was extended to 80 feet (24,4 meters), the same width as the main street, so carriages could turn at the gate. Later, the street was transformed into a lively market with a smithy. Today Matoppo House serves as a pet-friendly guesthouse.

Our History

It is believed that the original Beach Hotel and surrounding area belonged to Piet Retief and his family. His home, a tennis court and servants quarters stood on this ground.

Tenders for the proposed Beach Hotel were called for on 22 June 1893. The wood and iron structure was designed by architect George William Smith. Construction progressed rapidly and on 16 February 1894, the hotel was officially opened with a grand luncheon party. The first Manager was Mr. Edward Steinmann.

Then, sadly, at 5 o’clock on 1 December 1915, the hotel went up in flames. Townsfolk rushed to witness firemen desperately fighting the fire which destroyed the entire building within an hour. In 1922 Humewood was ripe for development after the Marine Drive was completed. Mr. Bill Poole immediately took the option on the first hotel site and built the second Beach Hotel. The building was completed in 1924. The hotel changed hands several times and was later bought by a Mrs. Lupping at an auction for £46 000. Mrs. Lolly Shtein, daughter of the Luppings, lives in Bandle which is a block of flats next to the Beach Hotel. Wilfred Guscott bought the hotel from the Luppings, and his nephew, Roy Lombard, bought it in 1958.

Mr Lombard brought about the first alterations to the hotel when he elevated it to the first three star hotel in the country. It is now a popular family run hotel which welcomes holidaymakers and businessmen alike from across the world.
