About the Area
Zambia, especially the Luangwa Valley, is famous for its incredible walking safaris. Here, guests discover the environment on foot, enjoying eyeopening and exciting sightings. Experts have dubbed the South Luangwa one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world. The concentration of game around the Luangwa River and its oxbow lagoons is among the most productive in Africa.
The countryside in the Luangwa Valley is remarkable. The vegetation is characterized by riverine forest which is wonderfully green all year round. The South Luangwa National Park offers spectacular wildlife viewing and is recognized as one of the best parks in Africa to encounter the elusive leopard. Elephants abound and expansive herds of buffalo are often seen. The Luangwa River is home to crocodile and sizeable pods of hippo.
One of the most well-known endemic species in the Luangwa Valley is the Thorneycroft's giraffe. Their distinctive pattern consists of large, irregular shaped brown to black patches separated by white to yellow bands.
Hermanus Whale Cruises
A warm welcome to Hermanus Whale Cruises who offer you a "tail" you can tell others, and an incredible, up close experience of 2 hours boat-based whale watching in Hermanus on South Africa’s whale coast.
We have been operating in the Walker Bay area since the first permits for boat based whale watching were granted in 1998. All our skippers and guides are registered tour guides and come from the local community of Hawston just outside of Hermanus. Their combined experience enables us to provide you with a vast amount of local information, especially within the boat based whale watching area.
Our boat based whale watching company is based in the new harbour of Hermanus on the Cape south coast, a 90-minute drive from Cape Town. We can take up to 87 passengers including 5 crew members on board. There is an open top viewing deck that seats 28 passengers, while the front viewing deck seats 7. Our "Whale Cruiser" is wheelchair-friendly! We serve snacks, mineral water and soft drinks during the trip. Our seasonal operating period is from June to December.
Southern Right Whales are migratory mammals. They spend one season in one place and the rest of the year in another, and travel long distances in between these seasons. In summer (December through May), they are in the cold polar regions of the Southern Hemisphere where food (mainly krill) is present and plentiful. Winters (June through November) are spent around the shallow coastal waters of Southern Africa, South America and Australia. The shallow, sandy-bottomed and sheltered bays of our coastline are perfect for mating, calving, nursing their young and resting.
From January to May and four time s a day (weather permitting), we also offer one to two hours long eco-tours, a sight-seeing experience where you can interact with dolphins, seals, clawless otters and a variety of sea birds.
If you would like to explore South Africa’s diverse culture on land, join us for a cultural tours where you meet the local people and learn more of their history, culture and environment. We will also visit several historic fishing villages and Moravian mission stations, and gladly arrange a township tour.
Indigo Safaris offers a wide range of day trips and activities from Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and Livingstone in Zambia, with helicopter rides, rafting, microlight flights, bungee jumping, canoeing, sedate river cruises, game drives in nearby reserves or in neighbouring Botswana, and transfers.
We can also book a range of hand-picked accommodation options.
The majestic Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwean/Zambian border is within easy reach of Chobe National Park, Botswana, by road, has direct flights from Namibia and South Africa, and is a short drive from the excellent Hwange National Park, making it easy to combine destinations in one unforgettable safari itinerary.
The largest sheet of falling water in the world, twice as high as Niagara Falls, and 1,708 metres long, it is the biggest waterfall in the world, and considered one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The rumble of the falls can be heard from up to 40 kilometres away and the spray, up to about half a kilometre high when the Zambezi River is in full flood, from a distance of almost 50km.
A guided or unguided tour of the falls on the Zimbabwe side, the longer of the two, takes around two hours. Victoria Falls is an extremely popular destination due to the amazing amount of activities on offer, making it suitable for every type of traveller. Take a helicopter flight or a microlight over the falls for a breath-taking bird's-eye view of Mosi-oa-Tunya - 'The Smoke That Thunders’ or go white-water rafting downstream of the falls for what is considered the best one-day white water rafting in the world. Adrenaline junkies can also gorge swing and bungee jump from Livingstone Bridge.
For a more sedate experience, canoe the tranquil waters of the Zambezi upstream from the falls to see hippos, crocs, and, if you are lucky, a raft of elephants crossing to the islands in the middle, or take a sundowner cruise with a wildlife guide and observe the life on the river banks whilst enjoying nibbles and sipping a G&T. For more olfactive delights, High Tea at Victoria Falls Hotel, the oldest hotel in the country and a colonial classic, is a must, as is dinner at Jungle Junction. You can browse the outdoor craft market, have dinner on the rails on board the Bushtracks Express, or look for rhinos in the Stanley and Livingstone Game Reserve.
We work with a range of guest houses and hotels in Victoria Falls town, all well-located for those wishing to have an action-packed stay. Amongst our favourites are Victoria Falls Hotel, Batonka Guesthouse, and close to town, Victoria Falls Safari Lodge.
45-minutes away, Zambezi National Park offers some great wildlife encounters with four of the "Big Five" (no rhinos), and a good variety of plains game. It is also home to a few sublime lodges and tented camps on the sandy river bank or an island. Thus, if you are not fussed about doing lots of activities from town, you can stay up in the national park, enjoy the wildlife, some canoeing, fishing, or river cruising, and then pop into town to see the falls for half a day.
Kosi Forest Lodge
A wonderland of forests and waterways - Our eco-concious Kosi Forest Lodge is situated within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s first World Heritage Site, giving you the opportunity to experience exclusive, close encounters with the almost untouched African wilderness. We offer comfortable tent-style, thatched forest rooms nestling under wide milkwood trees, with thoughtful attention to blending into this pristine indigenous sand forest environment. Each cottage has both a romantic outdoor bathroom boma as well as en-suite indoor shower.
Relax at the swimming pool overlooking Lake Shengeza and watch the resident pod of hippos. The common and private facilities at the lodge are focused on getting you to observe and explore nature as you go about your day. We take full advantage of Maputaland’s sultry weather and most meals are served al fresco under a canopy of magnificent trees. Your buffet breakfast and luncheon are served in the covered dining area, where you’ll also find a 24/7 tea and coffee station. A massive Zulu podberry tree is the focal point of the main lodge with the lounge, dining room and well-stocked bar all opening onto a large wooden deck around the tree.
Kosi Forest Lodge is accessible by 4x4 vehicle only. Guests who are NOT travelling in a 4x4 vehicle should meet a representative from Kosi Forest Lodge nearby on prior arrangement. Guests will follow our representative to a secure parking area in the town where they will leave their vehicle. They will then be transferred in an open 4x4 vehicle to Kosi Forest Lodge.
Apart from appreciating the hush of the forest setting, there are a host of wilderness activities at the lodge, including boating day trips to the beach and Kosi lakes, a unique ecosystem that is home to a spectacular variety of birds and animals; or excursions to Kosi Bay mouth to snorkel and observe traditional spiral reed fishing methods. To truly appreciate the beauty of the unique surrounding ecosystem of waterways, intertwined lakes, grasslands and ancient forests, you need to spend a few days exploring - either by canoe, motorised boat or on foot.

Tsowa Safari Island
"Tsowa" means ‘new beginnings’, which is what you will find on this pristine island in the middle of the mighty Zambezi River, 35 km west of Victoria Falls. A surreal place, the whispers of this majestic river are broken only by occasional calls of the African fish eagle. In a camp fringed by a beautiful forest, a soft path leads to a cluster of century old baobabs. This is our safari island Tsowa, sensitively situated within the Zambezi National Park.
This luxury modern day explorer's camp, Tsowa Safari Island offers 8 luxury safari tents with en-suite indoor and outdoor showers. Each safari tent is carefully positioned in the shade of the forest to ensure guest privacy and to maximize the river views.
It is a great privilege and honour to have been awarded the concession to develop a camp on Tsowa Safari Island and for this reason every care and consideration has been taken to position the 8 eco-friendly luxury tents to create minimal environmental impact and blend into the natural surroundings as much as possible while giving guests the chance to appreciate the trees, river, wild animals and birds of the Zambezi National Park.
The camp can only be accessed by pre-booked transfers. Guests are transferred in closed air-conditioned vehicles to our private entrance to the Zambezi National Park, where they will be met by a guide and transferred in an open 4x4 vehicle to the river's edge. From here it is a quick boat trip across to the island.
There are three distinct seasons in Zimbabwe. The dry season, April to October, is the best time for game viewing. The wet season is from November to March, when the river is at its highest and the Victoria Falls are most spectacular and migrant birds are prolific.
A river cruise is offered in the late afternoon to enjoy the spectacular sunsets along the Zambezi River. Guests can enjoy drinks and snacks with our guides on our comfortable river cruiser while keeping an eye out for game coming down to drink at the banks of the river. There is nothing like sipping a sundowner while watching elephants come to drink on the river bank!
Early morning game drives are offered through this scenically beautiful national park. They last approximately 3 to 4 hours and include a refreshment stop at one of our favourite view points. The Zambezi National Park is home to large herds of elephant, buffalo, lion, hyena, giraffe and numerous antelope species.
We offer a host more activities, ranging from day trips to Victoria Falls, guided canoeing and guided island walks to guided game walks and fishing, with September to October being a superb fishing season.
